Topics:
Emerging Issues, Respiratory Protection

Description:
Topics discussed are NIOSH CBRN respirator approval standards and tests, unique performance and design characteristics, technical cautions and limitations statements, applicable federal regulations, best practices and field observations of how selection, use, and maintenance of NIOSH-approved CBRN respirators contribute to respiratory protection programs. CBRN respirators including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), air-purifying respirators (APR), powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR) and air-purifying escape respirators (APER) are integrated in the instruction to provide participants “hands-on” opportunities and training in the art of how to recognize an approved respirator configuration. Key PDC information is summarized in Fact Sheet guidance documents provided to participants. NIOSH instructors integrate responses to participant questions concerning CBRN respirator workplace applications into PDC instruction.

Prerequisites:
Knowledge of 29 CFR Part 1910.134; 29 CFR Part 1910.120; 42 CFR Part 84

Outcomes:
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

  • Apply the information and establish a more effective OSHA compliant, 29CFR1910.134, 29CFR1910.120 respiratory protection program.
  • Describe unique caution, limitations and restrictions of use and special maintenance requirements for each NIOSH-approved class of CBRN respirators (SCBA, APR, PAPR, APR).

Outline:
The PDC addresses special performance and design characteristics of NIOSH-approved CBRN respirators related to selection, use and maintenance as follows

  • For each CBRN respirator type including Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), Air-Purifying Respirator (APR) gas mask, Powered Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR), and Air-Purifying Escape Respirator (APER) the following information and guidance related to selection, use and maintenance is provided:
    • Special performance and design characteristics and requirements
    • Key user instructions, NIOSH approval label information and OSHA requirements
    • CBRN Respirators and components are displayed for illustration purposes and available for hands-on inspection
    • Q&A discussion related to workplace applications
  • Electronic documents of PDC materials are distributed in advance of the PDC and addressed during the presentations
    • NIOSH CBRN Respirator Fact Sheets for each respirator type
    • NIOSH CBRN respirator standards and key test procedures
    • OSHA 29CFR1910.134 and 29CFR1910.120
    • Other key information resources related to CBRN respirator selection, use and maintenance
  • As a follow-up to the PDC, participants are encouraged to question instructors concerning specific workplace applications issues.

Transfer of Knowledge:
Instructors will evaluate participants understanding of the materials presented based on:

  • Hands-on demonstrations and practicum
