Topics:
Hazardous Chemicals, Stewardship and Sustainability

Description:
AIHA in collaboration with SCHC (Society for Chemical Hazard Communication) has developed a registry program for SDS and label authors to provide a way for practitioners to demonstrate their competency in this important aspect of chemical safety. This PDC will help participants prepare for the registry proficiency exam by reviewing the overall process, examining the body of knowledge, and reviewing the evaluation process.

Participants will be required to meet minimum qualifications and pass a proficiency evaluation. The registry proficiency exam will consist of a multiple choice test covering specific knowledge and skill sets needed to prepare accurate MSDS and labels and a practical hazard classification and SDS authoring evaluation.

This PDC is not required to become registered and completion does not guarantee inclusion in the registry.

Value Added:
Post PDC, participants will be eligible to complete the proficiency exam and become REGISTERED USERS of SDS and Label Authoring.

Prerequisites:
Experience in MSDS and label authoring and a working knowledge of the GHS (Globally Harmonized System) for the classification and labelling of chemicals.

There are qualification requirements for the registry. Participants should be sure they meet these requirements before taking this PDC.

Learning Aids:
Participants must bring a scientific calculator and a copy of GHS requirements.

Outcomes:
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify skills required to succeed in SDS and Label Authoring
  • Describe the body of knowledge covered and required for the registry
  • Recognize areas where additional study is needed to develop and improve their skill set

Outline:

  • Overview of the registry process
  • Qualifications
  • Body of knowledge expected of a registered SDS and label author
  • Proficiency elements (test and practical)
  • Review of the body of knowledge
  • General computation
  • General chemistry concepts
  • Toxicology principles and concepts
  • Health hazard classification
  • Environmental hazard classification
  • Physical hazard classification
  • IH aspects of the SDS
  • Safety aspects of the SDS
  • SDS and label development workshop

Transfer of Knowledge:
Instructors will evaluate participants understanding of the materials presented based on:

  • Practice exercises
  • Workshops
  • Group activities
